New Yorkers want to try Uber

Unlike most of America, only one third of New Yorkers (34%) have access to a household car, and New York’s extensive subway system is the most commonly used mode of transport – used by over three quarters of New Yorkers (77%). Although a large 43% of New Yorkers do use cabs, more people use buses and walk (67%).

New apps like Uber might be about to transform the way people move about the city.

Which of the following best describes the reasons why you do not travel by cab/taxi?

Price is a real barrier for New Yorkers when it comes to cabs. 78% of those who don’t use taxis aren’t using them because they are just too expensive.

New York also has some very particular rules about how hailing cabs on the streets. Only New York yellow cabs are legally allowed to pick up hailed fairs in Manhattan with other- potentially cheaper - car services and limos only available with a call or through online apps.

New online apps that allow New Yorkers to order taxis from their smartphone seem to be gaining traction particularly with the younger demographic (18-35 years). 11% of younger New Yorkers who use cabs have given Uber, or a similar app a try.

Uber connects passenger with drivers and ridesharing services. Cars are reserved by sending a text message or using the mobile app which lets customers track the location of their car and have their ride automatically charged to a credit cards so no cash needs to change hands.

43% of New Yorkers who have heard of Uber think it is a good idea but there are some who worry about security. For those who aren’t convinced by Uber there are safety worries including random strangers posing as cab drivers.

For those who think Uber is a good thing; reliable pickups, cashless convenience and clear pricing were the most attractive features of the new service.

66% of New Yorkers who hadn’t use the Uber service said they were definitely going to use Uber or would consider using it in the future.
